Now, some places are going even further.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n  <div class=\"entry--meta content-width\">\n           <p class=\"authors\">By\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/author\/grace-dobush\/\">Grace Dobush<\/a>\n\n             \n         \n     <\/p>\n    \n  \n  <p>20 January 2023  <span class=\"desktop-only\">\u2014<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/issue-7-equality\/\">Issue 7: Equality<\/a> \n  <\/div><!-- .entry-meta -->\n\n<\/header><!-- .entry-header -->\n\t<div class=\"entry-content content-width\">\n\n\n\n<p>Many countries have laws that say women and men must be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adp.com\/resources\/articles-and-insights\/articles\/p\/pay-equity.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paid equally<\/a> for equal work. But enforcing such laws seems to be easier in theory than in practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, women still earn on average just 80% of what men earn. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/wb\/data\/earnings\/wage-gap-race-occupation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United States<\/a>, women overall earn on average 83% of what men earn \u2014&nbsp;a major jump from just 62% in 1979. But when examined further by race, Hispanic women earn just 57% of what white men earn. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/oct\/12\/gender-pay-gap-widest-for-ethnic-minority-women-labour-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In the U.K.<\/a>, women overall earn about 88% of what men earn, but for Black women that average is 74%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pay discrimination can also happen based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/the-wage-gap-among-lgbtq-workers-in-the-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human Rights Commission<\/a> estimates that LGBTQ people in the U.S. earn about 10% less than average. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2022\/07\/01\/lgbtq-pay-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In the U.K.<\/a>, that gap is estimated at 16%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even in Iceland, where a 2017 law made it illegal to discriminate based on gender, ethnicity, sexuality or nationality, the gender wage gap <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statice.is\/publications\/news-archive\/wages-and-income\/unadjusted-gender-pay-gap-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">persists<\/a>: Women earned on average 10.2% less than men in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best ways to improve pay equality&nbsp;is to simply talk about pay more. Discussing pay is speech protected by law for workers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlrb.gov\/about-nlrb\/rights-we-protect\/your-rights\/your-rights-to-discuss-wages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United States<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/equality-act-2010-guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Kingdom<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labourguide.co.za\/most-recent\/1845-employees-cannot-contract-out-of-right-to-disclose-salary-information#:~:text=Employees%20are%20often%20contractually%20prohibited,disclosure%20as%20a%20disciplinary%20offence.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Africa<\/a> and Iceland, and is permitted in many other countries. In some U.S. states, employers cannot ask candidates their past salary history in interviews or base a candidate&#8217;s compensation on their wage history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the name of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), many companies have started making their pay scales more transparent. Now, an increasing number of U.S. jurisdictions are starting to require <a href=\"https:\/\/sbshrs.adpinfo.com\/trend-to-watch-wage-transparency-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pay disclosure<\/a> in job ads. For example, a revised state law requires companies in California with 15 or more employees to include the pay scale for any job posting starting January 1, 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>At the current rate, it will take another 134 years to achieve pay equality between men and women.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Pay transparency solutions, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-ilibrary.org\/social-issues-migration-health\/pay-transparency-tools-to-close-the-gender-wage-gap_eba5b91d-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OECD explains<\/a>, encourages employers to prevent and address pay inequity, gives workers more information to combat pay discrimination, and helps governments target gender wage gaps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gathering and auditing data to make comparisons controlled for various factors \u2014 such as level of education, years of experience, location, age, etc. \u2014 is a huge task. Judging whether a person as an individual is being underpaid is also difficult. In Chile and Germany, companies are required to share pay information upon request for five or six employees in comparable positions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rectifying pay inequity shouldn\u2019t be just a matter of compliance \u2014 it\u2019s about doing what\u2019s right for your people. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/global-gender-gap-report-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Economic Forum\u2019s 2022 Gender Gap Report<\/a> says, at the current rate of growth and with pandemic setbacks, it will take another 134 years to achieve pay equality between men and women.
