Leave Tijuana behind, walk out of the pedestrian crossing building. Take a trolley to downtown San Diego, then a bus that leaves you a few blocks away from work. Around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernborder.org\/border_lens_southern_border_region_at_a_glance#:~:text=About%2019%20millio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">half a million people<\/a> cross into the U.S. from Mexico on a daily basis along the southern U.S. border ports of entry. The San Ysidro border crossing Villalpando uses, which connects Tijuana to San Diego, is the busiest in the entire United States, with about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/about-us\/gsa-regions\/region-9-pacific-rim\/land-ports-of-entry\/san-ysidro-land-port-of-entry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">90,000<\/a> daily northbound crossings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Villalpando works at a local San Diego TV station as a video editor and studio technician. \u201cI really like to read and watch the news. The technical side is fun, too,\u201d he says. His salary is about $21,000 to $26,000 per year. \u201cThat\u2019s not much, but it gives me more freedom!\u201d he adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freedom, according to Villalpando, is to work fewer hours. \u201cI\u2019m sure that some people in Mexico could earn even more than me for the same job, but it\u2019s because they work more. I only go to San Diego three to four days per week, and I sometimes work from home, while Mexicans usually work six days a week.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If he lived north of the border, Villalpando\u2019s salary would be categorized as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/sdhcd\/rental-assistance\/income-limits-ami\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extremely low income<\/a>. San Diego was just named the <a href=\"https:\/\/realestate.usnews.com\/places\/rankings\/most-expensive-places-to-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most expensive city to live in the U.S. in 2023-24<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/regions\/west\/news-release\/occupationalemploymentandwages_sandiego.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mean annual wage for a full-time job is about $65,000<\/a>. \u201cI hear my colleagues who live in San Diego talk about their salary, and for them, it\u2019s brutal,\u201d he says. \u201cThe situation is very different for me: I live only five minutes south of the border, and I don\u2019t consider myself rich, but I am for sure privileged.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Villalpando doesn\u2019t mind the commute to San Diego \u2014 he reads or listens to music or podcasts, and he likes his job \u2014 but being a daily border commuter also has its challenges. He uses an online app to check how long the Customs lines will be, and sometimes the wait adds a full hour to his commute, which can be harrowing at night.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m more scared to take the San Diego trolley at night than to be in Tijuana,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s very common to see people under the influence of drugs, and they don\u2019t have enough security officers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the border figures prominently in his future goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy dream is to create the first film festival simultaneously showing a documentary projection on both sides of the border.\u201d Villalpando would hang a screen on the metal bars separating the two countries, along the ocean.
