Our photographer takes you to the streets of Jakarta during this Muslim holy month when giving is at its peak.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n  <div class=\"entry--meta content-width\">\n           <p class=\"authors\">By\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/author\/wienda-parwitasari\/\">Wienda Parwitasari<\/a>\n\n             \n         \n     <\/p>\n    \n  \n  <p>1 July 2021  <span class=\"desktop-only\">\u2014<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/issue-2-experimentation\/\">Issue 2: Experimentation<\/a> \n  <\/div><!-- .entry-meta -->\n\n<\/header><!-- .entry-header -->\n\t<div class=\"entry-content content-width\">\n\n\n\n<p>With more than 270 million residents, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world.&nbsp;With 85% of its population adhering to Islam, it\u2019s also the largest Muslim-majority country in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly to the 2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafonline.org\/about-us\/research\/caf-international-research-hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAF World Giving Index<\/a>, Indonesia ranks among the top 10 countries globally in terms of charitable giving, with a big increase in the past decade. The rising salaries of the growing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.euromonitor.com\/indonesias-rising-middle-class-to-transform-the-countrys-consumer-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">middle class<\/a>&nbsp;have also led to increased zakat giving, based on the Islamic principle of giving part of your income or wealth to the needy. Indonesia\u2019s government has promoted zakat as a way to achieve the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals of reducing poverty and hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/country\/indonesia\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Bank<\/a>&nbsp;reclassified Indonesia as an upper middle-income country in 2020, a reflection of its rising global status. Normally, food is distributed in the mosque, but because of Covid-19, iftar meals are outdoors only. Members of the Al Azhar Mosque hand out iftar meals donated by congregants to motorcyclists passing by in South Jakarta. The neighborhood Ramadan committee provides 500 to 600 iftar meals every day. The meals vary every day, but popular dishes include noodles or Padang rice. Indonesia\u2019s zakat oversight institution,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.puskasbaznas.com\/publications\/books\/1480-indonesia-zakat-outlook-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BAZNAS<\/a>, reported that zakat collected by registered nonprofits grew from about 8 trillion Indonesian rupiahs ($560 million) in 2018 to IDR 10.2 trillion in 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wien.21-April.-ADP-8-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wien.21-April.-ADP-8-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wien.21-April.-ADP-8-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wien.21-April.-ADP-8-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wien.21-April.-ADP-8-375x250.jpg 375w, https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wien.21-April.-ADP-8.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Social distancing rules are in effect to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in Jakarta. The iftar meals distributed by the Cempaka Putih Tengah XX Ramadan committee are donated by residents and seven local companies. Filantropi Indonesia has found that fundraising during the pandemic has shifted from mass media fund drives to focus more on social media, crowdfunding and influencer campaigns.
