Incandescent light bulbs were rapidly being replaced with energy-efficient LEDs, and connected lighting was an early application of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.signify.com\/global\/lighting-academy\/browser\/course\/iot-essentials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Internet of Things<\/a>. Philips Lighting then became&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.signify.com\/global\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Signify<\/a>&nbsp;in 2018, a move that let the company reinvent itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe lighting business is going through an immense transformation,\u201d says Mark van Bijsterveld, Signify\u2019s chief HR officer. \u201cBut Signify is like a startup with 130 years of experience in the lighting industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That history gives deep expertise and made Signify a market leader from the get-go, but the inherited HR and payroll systems weren\u2019t as lean or modern as the new company. Modern lighting is able to cut energy use by 60% to 80% \u2014 why couldn\u2019t payroll run just as efficiently?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Bijsterveld had been part of Philips\u2019 HR team since 2006 and split off with the lighting division in 2016. At the time, Philips had 120,000 employees worldwide, with about a quarter of those employees in lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we were planning the move of Signify out of Philips, I knew how important the back-office systems would be for continuity and a smooth process,\u201d van Bijsterveld says. The company has a presence in 74 countries, in core markets such as the Netherlands, China and the United States, but also in many smaller markets with just a few dozen employees. Getting payroll right for all 37,000 employees globally was no small task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Bijsterveld realized it was an opportunity to entirely redesign their payroll system, and Signify partnered with ADP to make it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Payroll is like water. You turn on the tap, and you expect it to flow. It\u2019s only notable if it doesn\u2019t show up.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe needed to create a strong, stable organization no matter the market. It\u2019s only notable if it doesn\u2019t show up.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standardizing and simplifying Signify\u2019s payroll was the goal. Focusing on France and Poland to begin with, teams from Signify and ADP got together to map out the payroll process. They put up brown paper on the walls and sketched out the processes in continuous improvement sessions, wrapping up the meetings with concrete action lists and KPIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all, it took about 10 months to redesign Signify\u2019s payroll process, but 95% of the efficiencies came out of a four-month sprint. Determining not only what would be changed, but the correct order of making those changes, required experts from both Signify and ADP to weigh in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/signify_02-1-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-999\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/signify_02-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/signify_02-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/signify_02-1-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/rethinkq.adp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/signify_02-1.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe day after we ran the first payroll in Signify, I came into the office at the same time as the CEO, and we ended up in the same lift,\u201d van Bijsterveld remembers. \u201cAs we went up, I said to him, \u2018So, yesterday was a big day, wasn\u2019t it?\u2019 And he thought for a second then said, \u2018What happened yesterday?\u2019 I told him that we\u2019d run the payroll without a hitch.
